These are the only photographs ever taken from the surface of Venus — returned by Soviet Venera landers that survived about an hour or two in an oven at roughly 464 °C and 92× Earth's sea-level pressure.

NASA NSSDCA Venus Fact Sheet: surface pressure 92 bars; average temperature 737 K (464 °C); near-surface atmosphere ~96.5% CO2, 3.5% N2; https://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/fact... (checked 2026-10-14).
NASA NSSDCA / NSSDC archive (Venera 13): survived 127 minutes on surface; planned design life 32 minutes; landing 1 March 1982 east of Phoebe Regio; site ~457 °C, ~84 Earth atmospheres (mission page / archive catalog).
NASA NSSDCA image catalog: Venera 13 color panorama notes (survived 2 h 7 min); Venera 9 operated ~53 minutes on 22 Oct 1975 and returned first surface image of another planet; Venera 10 ~65 minutes (25 Oct 1975).
NASA Science / Magellan mission overview: Magellan arrived 1990; synthetic aperture radar mapped most of Venus through the clouds; volcanic surface features.
NASA Science articles on Venus surface extremes (~465 °C, ~92× Earth pressure) and short lander lifetimes (~2 hours or less with conventional electronics).
Sulfuric acid cloud deck / opaque clouds: standard NASA Venus atmosphere description (fact sheet composition + Magellan/mission materials on radar needed because clouds hide the surface).
