In the Hands of the Potter: Jeremiah 18:1-12

What does it mean to be “In the Hands of the Potter”? In Jeremiah 18:1-12, God sends Jeremiah down to the potter’s house to teach one of the clearest object lessons in Scripture. God is the Potter, His people are the clay, and He is sovereignly shaping nations, individuals, and hearts. This sermon from Jeremiah 18 shows that God is sovereign over the nations, sovereign over individuals, and merciful toward those who repent. The marred vessel in the potter’s hands reminds us that God does not discard His people simply because they are broken or flawed. In Christ, He patiently reshapes us into vessels useful for His purposes. But this passage also gives a serious warning. Clay that remains soft can be reshaped, but clay that hardens itself in the potter’s hands faces judgment. Judah refused to repent, saying they would continue following their own plans and the stubbornness of their evil hearts. Their response teaches us the danger of resisting God’s work in our lives.
