Every terrier was built to kill something. Not to guard, not to herd, not to retrieve — to go underground after an animal that bites back. The small fluffy ones in handbags are that same dog, shrunk. Chapters 0:00 – Every one was built to kill 0:17 – The earth dogs 1:51 – The ratters 2:59 – The two that were bred to fight 3:40 – Why your terrier does that Things worth knowing • The Jack Russell was bred by a Devon parson to follow the hunt, go down a hole and bark the fox back out — not to kill it. Everything about the dog serves that: a chest that fits the tunnel, legs that run all morning, a voice you can hear through earth. • The Yorkshire Terrier was never a lapdog. Scottish weavers brought small terriers into the Yorkshire mills in the 1800s to kill rats; the modern Yorkie descends from a famous ratting and show dog, Huddersfield Ben, born 1865. • The Airedale, the "King of Terriers", came from crossing terriers with the Otterhound in the Aire valley. In the First World War, Airedales carried messages across battlefields for both sides. • The Fox Terrier was bred mostly white so a huntsman couldn't confuse it with the fox. It was once one of the most popular dogs in the world and is now rarer than the breeds it helped create. • The Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Bull Terrier are bull-and-terrier crosses, made when bull baiting was banned and the fighting moved into pits. The Bull Terrier's egg-shaped skull came later, in the 20th century — the most man-made head in dogdom. All photographs are from Wikimedia Commons.
