Deep inside the remote forests of Mizoram, near the India–Bangladesh border, I experienced one of the most thrilling and unforgettable nights of my North East India journey.
During my solo motorcycle expedition across North East India, I travelled to a remote village inhabited by the Chakma tribal community. Far away from busy towns, modern city life, and ordinary tourist destinations, I had the opportunity to experience the traditional lifestyle, food culture, and everyday life of the local people.
After spending the evening in the village and finishing dinner with the locals, I joined them on a midnight crab-hunting expedition deep inside the forest. What began as a simple night adventure soon turned into an incredible experience filled with darkness, rivers, mountains, and the excitement of exploring the wilderness after midnight.
🌌 A Midnight Journey into the Deep Forest
Our adventure began with a small boat ride across a vast river. We travelled for approximately 40 minutes through the darkness, surrounded by the sounds of nature and the mysterious atmosphere of the forest at night.
After reaching a riverbank, we stopped the boat, got down, and crossed a hill to reach another smaller river hidden deep inside the forest.
Walking through the dark forest at midnight was both thrilling and adventurous. With the local people leading the way, we continued our journey towards the river where crabs could be found.
The atmosphere was completely different from anything experienced during the daytime. The darkness, the sounds of the forest, the flowing water, and the unfamiliar surroundings made every moment exciting.
🦀 Collecting Crabs in the Middle of the Night
When we finally reached the small river, we discovered plenty of crabs hiding in and around the water. The local people knew exactly where to look and how to collect them.
Together, we searched the river and collected as many crabs as we could before making our way back.
Watching the villagers carry out this activity using their local knowledge and traditional techniques gave me a glimpse into a way of life that remains closely connected to nature.
For me, this was more than just crab hunting. It was an opportunity to experience the knowledge, skills, and resourcefulness of people who have lived close to the forest and rivers for generations.
🌿 Chakma Tribal Food Culture and Traditional Lifestyle
The Chakma community has its own distinctive cultural traditions, cuisine, and way of life. During my visit, I learned about some of the foods consumed by people in this particular village.
Their food practices include locally available ingredients, and some people consume animals such as snakes, frogs, and squirrels as part of their traditional diet. Food habits can vary between families and communities, and these practices should be understood within their local cultural and environmental context.
Living in a remote area surrounded by forests and rivers, the villagers make use of the natural resources available to them. Traditional knowledge of the land, waterways, and locally available food plays an important role in their everyday lives.
In this video, I share my personal experience of joining the local people on a midnight crab-hunting expedition and witnessing how they collect food from their natural surroundings.
Stay tuned for the next episode to discover more about the food culture of this remote Chakma village.
My journey across North East India is not just about visiting famous tourist destinations. I want to travel deeper into remote villages, meet local communities, understand their cultures, experience their traditional food, and share the stories of people whose everyday lives are rarely seen by the outside world.
From riding through challenging mountain roads to spending nights in remote tribal villages, every experience teaches me something new about the incredible diversity of India.
Join me on this journey as I continue exploring the unexplored places, cultures, and traditions of North East India.
