Looking at the Osprey Fairview 55 for carry-on travel, Europe, or traveling without a roller bag? In this video, I show you how my Osprey Fairview 55 women’s travel backpack actually works, how the two-bag system separates, and why I chose it for traveling through Spain.
The Osprey Fairview 55 is actually TWO bags in one: a 40L main travel backpack + detachable 15L daypack. Separate them for air travel and you have a larger carry-on backpack plus a smaller personal-item/day bag. Reattach them when you want one travel system to carry both connected and on your back seamlessly.
As a 5'3" petite woman, one of my biggest considerations wasn't simply “How much can I fit?” It was: Can I comfortably carry everything I'm bringing?
For European travel, that matters. With cobblestone streets, stairs, trains, buses, walking to accommodations and places where a taxi may not be able to drop you directly at the front door. That's exactly why I wanted to explore traveling with a backpack instead of dragging a roller suitcase.
IN THIS VIDEO I SHOW YOU:
• How the Osprey Fairview 55 works
• The 40L main backpack + 15L detachable daypack
• How the two bags attach and separate (warning, I'm from Wisconsin and will say "bag" funny to any non-Midwesterner)
• How the backpack straps and hip belt work
• How the harness can be stowed away for travel
• Why the women's-specific fit appealed to me as a petite traveler
• How I plan to use the 40L bag as my main carry-on with packing cubes
• How I'll use the detachable daypack for travel days, sightseeing and everyday use
• Why I chose a backpack instead of a roller bag for Europe
• My approach to packing lighter for a multi-week trip to Spain (capsule wardrobe follow up!)
I'm preparing for three weeks traveling through Spain, including Málaga, Ronda and Seville, for both language immersion and a yoga retreat—and I'm challenging myself to do it without hauling a traditional checked roller suitcase around Europe.
This isn't about proving that you can cram as much as possible into a backpack. It's about deciding what you actually need, what you're willing to carry, and how you want to move through your destination.
If you're researching the Osprey Fairview 55 vs Fairview 40, looking for a women's travel backpack, trying to find a carry-on backpack for Europe, or wondering whether backpack-only travel could work for you, I hope seeing the Fairview system up close helps.
Follow along: I'll also be sharing in follow up videos what I actually pack, my three-week capsule wardrobe, how much the finished backpack weighs, and eventually—after Spain—what worked, what didn't, and what I'd pack differently next time.
