Presque Isle State Park is packed with secrets, but some of its coolest history is hiding right out in plain sight in the sand and the surf.
In this episode of Project Algerine, we head past Beach 10 to track down the forgotten ruins of a 19th-century coastal fog station, explore the fascinating off-the-grid houseboat community of Horseshoe Pond, and visit Erie's legendary 1872 lighthouse.
💨 THE LOST 1899 STEAM WHISTLE STATION:
• Tracking the Ruins: Watch as we uncover the hidden, crumbling concrete foundation of a massive, coal-fired 10-inch steam fog whistle built in 1899 to guide ships safely through treacherous Great Lakes storms.
• Shifting Sands: Discover how this exact spot used to be the absolute edge of the peninsula in 1899, demonstrating how dramatically Lake Erie's powerful currents have physically moved and expanded Presque Isle over the last century.
🏡 THE FLOATING VILLAGE OF HORSESHOE POND:
We take a look at Erie's unique, historic floating neighborhood. Living on barrels, anchors, and chains since the early 1900s, these houseboats moved from Misery Bay to Horseshoe Pond in the 1960s to protect the park's ecosystems. Today, only 24 of these highly coveted, multi-generational floating camps remain—and we track down one unfortunate houseboat that completely sank under the weight of a brutal 6-foot winter snowstorm!
⚓ INSIDE THE 1872 PRESQUE ISLE LIGHTHOUSE:
We stop by "The Flashlight"—Erie's iconic brick lighthouse completed in 1873. Learn how it was extended from 40 feet to 57 feet tall in 1896 to boost its fourth-order Fresnel lens, and discover what life was like for the keeper families who manually cranked the light before the Coast Guard took over.
