🚨A fresh debate has erupted between Ghana’s government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) following concerns raised about the country’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs). The government has reportedly pushed back against what it describes as numerous unverified reports about Ghana, while the IMF has raised questions about political appointments to SOE boards, reportedly citing the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) chairman as an example. An IMF report has also reportedly identified GH¢18.6 billion in financial irregularities involving State-Owned Enterprises and warned that improvements by some entities cannot hide persistent weaknesses across the wider SOE portfolio. President John Mahama has meanwhile met CEOs and heads of state-owned enterprises under SIGA as part of efforts to reposition the entities and make them financially viable. The discussion comes as questions continue to be raised about the relationship between the IMF and successive NDC governments. In another major development, a delegation from Namibia’s Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy has visited Ghana GoldBod on a benchmarking and consultation mission to learn from Ghana’s gold trading and regulatory framework.
