Frontier model providers are pushing training runs across multiple facilities because no single facility has enough power to process the workload, a shift the industry now calls scale-across. At the Six Five Summit: AI Unleashed 2026, Matt Kimball is joined by Sanjai Parthasarathi, Chief Marketing Officer at Coherent, to walk through what that shift requires. Parthasarathi points to data center interconnect transceivers and optical transport equipment as the two components that matter most, with bandwidth and energy efficiency topping customer priorities. He uses Coherent's multi-rail platform, which delivers 4X the capacity in the same physical footprint, as proof that energy pressure is real, and closes by looking ahead to data centers in space, where Coherent's satellite optics experience already applies. Key Insights: 🔹 Scale-across is driven by power limits. Parthasarathi says AI training runs are spanning multiple data centers because no single facility has enough power to process the workload, which is driving demand for high-bandwidth interconnects between sites. 🔹 Two functional blocks define scale-across networking: data center interconnect transceivers at the edge of each facility, and optical transport equipment that amplifies and monitors the signal across distance. Bandwidth and energy efficiency are the top performance priorities customers ask about. 🔹 Coherent's multi-rail platform lets customers hit four times the capacity inside the same physical enclosure. Power needs scale sub-linearly as capacity grows, solving a real constraint for transport equipment housed in fixed-size huts along highways and in residential areas. 🔹 Coherent's differentiation runs from raw materials to finished systems. Parthasarathi points to roughly 50 years of engineering history, more than 50 global manufacturing sites (20+ in the US), and expanding Indium Phosphide production to meet AI-driven demand. 🔹 Data centers in space face a different set of optical challenges. Parthasarathi says components need to survive launch, radiation, and vibration, and maintain line-of-sight connections between objects moving at roughly 4,000 kilometers per hour, work Coherent already does for the satellite communications market.
