China’s money supply has reached extraordinary levels—but does the surge in liquidity signal economic strength, deeper financial stress, or a growing challenge for the global economy? According to data from the People’s Bank of China, China’s M2 money supply reached 355.51 trillion yuan at the end of July 2026, increasing 7.7% year over year. M1 rose 4%, while M0 increased 11.6%. At the same time, July saw a record monthly contraction in new yuan bank lending, raising fresh questions about credit demand and the effectiveness of monetary stimulus. In this analysis, Amber Zaidi examines China’s expanding money supply, the difference between liquidity growth and real economic demand, and the potential implications for global markets. China’s economic strategy and the role of the People’s Bank of China Possible implications for the US dollar, global financial markets and emerging economies What China’s economic trajectory could mean for India THE BIG QUESTION Can expanding liquidity revive economic activity if businesses and households remain reluctant to borrow and spend? Or will China need a broader solution involving domestic demand, investment, consumption and structural reform? The attached chart compares M2 money supply with GDP across major economies. Such comparisons offer useful context, but a high M2-to-GDP ratio alone does not prove an impending financial crisis or establish how much money would leave China under a hypothetical scenario.
