There are places on this earth where time doesn’t just slow down… it stops. Places where the modern world’s noise fades into absolute silence, swallowed by miles of remote wilderness jagged stone and endless timber. For the last three years, I’ve been chasing a ghost. His name was Silas Vance by all accounts a mountain man of the times and even considered a mountain hermit gone missing decades ago in a remote stretch of wilderness. In the winter of 1974, he packed his mules and vehicles as well as family, made his way up into the high country, and simply… never came back down. Local authorities assumed he succumbed to the elements. But the old-timers in the valley whispered that Silas didn’t want to be found. They said he found a pocket of the wilderness untouched by time—and he decided to stay there until his final breath. For decades, historians and hikers tried to find his last known camp. All of them failed. The mountains are vast, unforgiving, and they protect their secrets well. Using coordinates pieced together from a recovered trapper’s logbook dated 1971, I plotted a route straight into the dead zone. No idea of what would be left. No cell service. just a lonely mountain road. So, we thought...The drive and trek to the site took some time and the elements seemed to be against us. as we face a major storm system with Freezing rain that turned the hale. Every step forward felt like a gamble. But according to the journal, Silas’s cabin—if it even still existed—was supposed to be just over the next major ridge but we found everything left behind and much more, so to mention many things I discovered sand found at this site simply don't make sense by the legends account however, but we hiked forward until reaching the structure nestled seamlessly into the cliffside, half-reclaimed by nature. Moss covers the roof. Rusted iron stovepipe juts out sideways. It looks like it grew out of the mountain itself. Astonished by the discovery yet leery of the incoming storm we drove through we certainly uncovered much more then we intended on this adventure. Simply an unbelievable explore to say the least. Join us this is one you don't want to miss! if only the walls and hundreds of vehicles left abandoned in the remote mountains could talk, we would be able to learn more about the mysterious mountain hermit who vanished in this area long ago.
