He usually saw the stocky Type 2 Fighter "Shoki" (Ki-44 "Tojo"), but he was reportedly deeply impressed by the sleek silhouette of the Type 3 Fighter "Hien" (Ki-61 "Tony") when he saw it during a temporary assignment to Itami Airfield (Settsu Airfield). He also spoke of how beautiful its flight posture was. He mentioned that because it was a liquid-cooled engine aircraft, anti-aircraft guns would sometimes fire on it by mistake, having misidentified it as an enemy plane. He also apparently accompanied officers to the underground command center at Osaka Castle. There was a form of intra-unit violence known as shigoki (brutal hazing); my grandfather, being a communications soldier, apparently avoided such abuse—as striking someone on the head could cause mental impairment and interfere with his duties—but he spoke with deep feeling about how others were beaten severely, saying it was a pitiful sight that was hard to watch.
