Cycling news for Monday, October 12, 2026: Il Lombardia and the riders' protest in Bergamo, Paul Seixas' first Monument victory, Giulio Ciccone signing for Pinarello-Q36.5, the Gravel World Championships in Nannup with Marianne Vos and Magnus Bak Klaris, Lachlan Morton's Pony Express record and the rest of the day's stories.
The dust has settled on Il Lombardia, but the race that mattered most may be the one that never started. Before the peloton rolled out of Bergamo, the riders staged their own protest over safety: Tom Pidcock and Ben Healy built a working group inside the bunch, bypassing the CPA, and Remco Evenepoel read the statement. Sean Kelly says it was long overdue and warns more action will follow if the UCI does not move on route safety.
On the road, Paul Seixas confirmed he is the real thing. The young Frenchman attacked 18 kilometres from the finish and soloed away from Enric Mas, Remco Evenepoel and world champion Brandon McNulty to take his first Monument. Marc Madiot called it a confirmation rather than a surprise, and joked that Tadej Pogacar had better cut his holiday short.
Elsewhere, Giulio Ciccone leaves Lidl-Trek after eight years for a three-year deal with Pinarello-Q36.5, James Knox may have ridden the final race of his career, and Brodie Chapman signs with Liv-AlUla-Jayco while announcing her first pregnancy. Valentina Cavallar asks the sport to remember the human being behind every anti-doping test.
In the United States, Lachlan Morton rewrote a 160-year-old record, completing his 1,998-mile Pony Express route in six days, 21 hours and 15 minutes and taking almost 20 hours off the 1861 mark. In Nannup, Western Australia, the first Gravel World Championships outside Europe delivered brutal racing and two new champions, while the tech on show told its own story.
We break down every story from the day in cycling, with the context, the numbers and what it all means for the rest of the season.
