Why I don’t cast aluminum matchplates???
I can’t lift that much sand!!! Casting a matchplate requires a flask at least 2 inches larger than the finished matchplate very quickly this gets you into lifting hundred + pound molds.
For the small number of castings I make it’s not necessary. I only have a coupe of patterns that have been used over 25 times. The expected life of a wooden pattern.
I normally comprise by casting an aluminum pattern and mounting it
On a wooden matchplate with the gating attached. Most of the positives of an aluminum matchplate with none of the negatives.
Weight ! A 1/2 inch aluminum matchplate weighs better than twice what a 3/4 plywood matchplate weighs.
But casting aluminum matchplates makes a great way to integrate follow boards and patterns together and It helps with very thin/weak patterns.
So throw that knowledge in your seabag.
