“Hriste Bože” is one of those rare songs that seems far older than it actually is — as though it had travelled through centuries before anyone wrote it down.
Its words were written by the distinguished Serbian poet and academician Ljubomir Simović for his drama “The Battle of Kosovo” (Boj na Kosovu), while the music was composed by Dušan Karuović. The song became widely known through the 1989 film “Boj na Kosovu,” directed by Zdravko Šotra, and over time became so deeply embedded in Serbian cultural memory that it has often been mistaken for an old traditional song. But this is not simply a song about a battle.
It is a prayer and a farewell.
A man leaves for Kosovo knowing that he may never return. He says goodbye to his mother, his sister and his bride; to summer, autumn and winter; to the rose and rosemary — and, most painfully, to the unborn son he will never see.
Above them stand Christ, heaven and destiny. Below them are the Morava and the Drina, transformed by Simović's extraordinary imagery into the wings of a land rising through the clouds.
This English adaptation was created so that listeners beyond Serbia could finally understand the words behind a melody that has already touched people across languages and borders.
It is not intended as a literal word-for-word translation. The English lyrics were carefully shaped for rhyme, natural singing rhythm and the existing melody while preserving the essential images and meaning of the Serbian original: Christ, Serbia, Morava and Drina, Kosovo, the Holy Trinity, the unborn son, the mother, sister and bride, the rose, rosemary and marigold — and the terrible finality of departure without return.
The musical arrangement deliberately preserves the original melodic identity while giving it a broader and more powerful sound: a deep male baritone, three distinct male voices, strings and a gradual rise from solemn prayer to an immense final farewell.
This is not a song celebrating war.
It is a song about faith, sacrifice, love, mortality and the unbearable price paid by those who leave everything they love behind.
For everyone who has heard “Hriste Bože” without understanding Serbian, this version is especially for you.
Christ our Lord, all holy, crucified...

SRPSKI
Ipak, nije reč o staroj narodnoj pesmi. РТС
Ona govori o veri, žrtvi, ljubavi, smrti i ceni koju plaća čovek koji odlazi, dok iza njega ostaje čitav njegov svet.
