Bob Spotz spent twelve years as an engineer. He worked with SpaceX, programmed robots, and led teams. Then he walked away from all of it to build a pressure washing company.
Today All Star Power Cleaning runs out of Cleveland with 325 Google reviews, a named fleet, and a team Bob trusts to run jobs without him on the truck. It started with a little red pressure washer his parents gave him, a Facebook ad offering to pull weeds, and a deck he washed for seventy five dollars.
This conversation is about the decision to leave the safe path and everything that came after it. Bob talks about growing up in Mentor with the college-or-nothing script, why the performative side of corporate life never computed for him, and the day on a treadmill when he decided he could either complain about it or take action.
He also does not sugarcoat the hard part. He walks through the worst day of his year: buying the new truck on a closing window, getting sold the wrong sealer after it was already on a customer's patio, and then having both of his guys quit within the week.
The other half of this is systems, which is where the engineering quietly shows back up. Bob built a belt system for hiring and promotion, borrowed from martial arts, that gives every employee a visible path from trainee to operations manager with profit sharing. He runs kaizen on his own shop. He applies the Toyota Production System to a business most people assume is just spraying water.
If you are sitting in a job you have outgrown, or you already jumped and you are in the messy part, this one is for you.
