For them, love was there before they knew it. Each had been the other’s destination all along. It began on a cliffside, overlooking the sea, in a flower garden Ikhlas built for her. Brooklyn: their pre-wedding shoot, walking the streets of Kings County and stopping at the bridge that holds half of New York’s love stories. The Nikkah: an intimate ceremony at the Attarwala home in South Carolina, Hira in cream and white, the couple reciting their holy vows under the gaze of both families. Ikhlas’s eagerness to finally see his bride was the clearest emotion in the room. The Sangeet: powder blue and royal blue, a first dance they’ll carry with them, cousins and aunts with rehearsed performances, and a dance floor nobody could stay off. The Walima: cream and red, floral elegance at the Hyatt Regency in Greenville. The speeches ran from laughter to a quieter kind of love, as family spoke of how proud Hira’s late father would have been. Hira honoured him in her own words, telling him she had found a partner who would love and care for her just as he would have. The hall held both things at once: the empty seat, and the warmth that remained. California: the final reception, coast to coast, where a wedding becomes a marriage.
