Welcome to Burns Road, Karachi, one of Pakistan’s most iconic and historic food streets.
In this episode of Street Food PK, I explore one of Karachi’s legendary food institutions in depth and try some of its most famous dishes, along with newer specialties including sizzling mutton tawa and Bihari kabab handi.
From aromatic biryani and juicy kebabs to rich qorma, BBQ and traditional Pakistani flavours, this is a deep dive into the food, atmosphere and legacy of Burns Road.
Burns Road has a fascinating history that goes beyond food. The street dates back to the 19th century and was originally known as Burnes Road, named after British doctor James Burnes. Its food culture grew significantly after the 1947 Partition, when migrants from different parts of British India, particularly Delhi, brought their culinary traditions to Karachi. Many of those flavours became an important part of Karachi’s food identity and can still be experienced across Burns Road today.
This shared culinary history is one of the reasons Pakistani and Indian food cultures have so many familiar flavours, from biryani and kebabs to nihari, dahi baray, kachori, samosa and other traditional dishes that travelled across the region and evolved in their own unique ways.
In this video, we go beyond just eating. We explore what makes Burns Road such an important part of Karachi’s food culture and why generations of people continue to come here for authentic Pakistani food.
If you enjoy Karachi street food, Pakistani food, Indian and Pakistani cuisine, biryani, kebabs, BBQ, traditional food, food history and authentic food tours, this episode takes you right into the heart of one of South Asia’s most famous food streets.
