The SCR is sitting right there in the chiller drive, and most techs were never shown what it actually does in the circuit. The electronics side rarely gets explained in plain terms. Think of it as a check valve for electricity. The AC sine wave comes in and splits into two paths. Each path lets current through one way and stops it the other way, so each one passes only half the wave. One half feeds the positive side of the DC bus, the other half feeds the negative side, and from there it moves on to the IGBTs. I walk the sine wave through it step by step, tie it back to the schematic, and cover why the SCR has to have its heat pulled out or it fails. Would love for you to join me for more chiller training here: https://chilleracademy.com/p/intro-to... What's covered: Following an AC sine wave into the SCR and where it splits into two circuits What the diode symbol looks like so you can spot it on a schematic Why a diode works like a check valve for electricity, letting current through one way and stopping it the other way How that is different from a mechanical check valve like the discharge check valve on a compressor, since nothing inside it moves Why a full sine wave goes in and only half of it comes out of each diode How the capacitors filter what comes out of the diodes Why the textbook terms matter less than knowing where the DC bus gets its positive and negative How one diode passes the negative half of the wave and the other passes the positive half Why what comes out is DC instead of AC, and how it moves on to the IGBTs to do work How the schematic lines up with what is physically happening in the circuit Why stopping part of the flow is exactly what the SCR is supposed to do Why the SCR has to have its heat pulled out, or it overheats and fails More chiller training: https://chilleracademy.com 0:00 What an SCR Does in a Chiller Drive 0:33 Where the Sine Wave Splits Into Two Circuits 1:16 The Diode as an Electrical Check Valve 1:55 How the Diode Chops Off Half the Sine Wave 3:15 How the DC Bus Gets Its Positive and Negative 4:21 Why Stopping Part of the Flow Is the Goal 5:00 Pulling Heat Out of the SCR Before It Fails
