Carcassonne is a spectacular medieval fortified citadel that seems to have come straight from a fairytale, with a double ring of walls, four gates, and 52 towers. It is one of the five most popular tourist cities in France and owes its global fame to the extraordinary nature of its historical heritage. With two UNESCO World Heritage sites, the medieval city and the Canal du Midi, Carcassonne fascinates and enchants with its perfectly preserved medieval ramparts, walls, and towers.
We begin our tour from the river, from the Pont Vieux, which allows us to admire the medieval citadel's walls. We enter the undefended part of the citadel via Rue Trivalle, which then leads to Rue Gustave Nadaud, which runs alongside the citadel's moat and leads to the Porte Narbonnaise, the entrance gate to the citadel.
After crossing the drawbridge, we change eras, and along Rue Cros Mayrevieille we arrive at Place du Château, with the bust of Jean Pierre Cros Mayrevieille.
From here, wandering a bit through the maze of narrow streets, past squares with wells and tables at various bars and restaurants, to admire the various medieval houses, we arrive at the moat of the Château Comtal, which will allow us to reach the Murs de Carcassonne, which we will explore together, and then return to the Château Comtal to complete the first part of the tour.
