🎵 RÖKKUR - WHEN THE CHIMNEYS WAKE
She returned to a house the war had emptied. Then smoke rose from its chimney again.
“When the Chimneys Wake” is an original Nordic cinematic chamber-folk song by RÖKKUR about a woman who returns to her abandoned childhood home and finds the rooms still holding everything her family left behind.
Her mother’s scarf waits by the door.
Three blue cups remain beside the stove.
Her sister’s final letter is hidden beneath the broken roof.
She is too late to hear their goodbye.
But she is not too late to clear the glass, lift the stones, plant the seeds and make the house breathe again.
If you have ever tried to rebuild hope from what sorrow left behind, this song is for you.
🎧 Expressive female mezzo-soprano vocals, Hardanger fiddle, pump organ, upright piano, plucked cello, soft mallet drums, brushed frame drum and warm final harmonies.
💬 What would you rebuild if one place still remembered your family?

📝 LYRICS
The front door leaned against the frame
One hinge had rusted through
Rain had darkened half the floor
Where our winter boots once stood
My mother’s scarf was on the hook
Still holding dust and smoke
I pressed it softly to my face
And heard the old house breathe
Open one window
Let the cold air move
A house is not abandoned
While someone remembers the rooms
The kitchen table had collapsed
Beneath a fallen beam
Three blue cups remained untouched
Beside a jar of seeds
Behind the stove, my sister’s height
Was carved into the wall
Eight years old, then nine, then ten
The final mark still small
Upstairs, beneath the broken roof
Her wooden box remained
Inside were seven folded notes
Each carrying my name
“Come home before the apples fall”
“Come home before first snow”
The final page held only this:
“I left the lamp below”
I was too late to find them here
Too late to hear goodbye
But not too late to lift the stones
And raise these walls again
I cleared the glass
I swept the ash
I straightened every chair
I split the wood
I mended cloth
I let the daylight enter
I planted seeds
Beside the wall
Where my sister marked her years
Then from the road
A wagon stopped
And unfamiliar voices called
Open every window
Let the warm air move
A house becomes a home again
When living hands fill the rooms
Light the stove before the evening
Set the blue cups in a row
When the chimneys wake above us
Those who left will always know
We carried more than sorrow
We carried timber, seed and flame
And when the chimneys woke at sunrise
The valley spoke our family name
Smoke rose gently through the pines
For the first time since the war
