E:-43 John Dryden | Biography and Works

John Dryden was a major English poet, critic, dramatist, and translator of the Restoration period. Born in 1631 in Northamptonshire, England, he was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. Dryden lived through the English Civil War, the Restoration of Charles II in 1660, and the political and religious conflicts of the late seventeenth century. He became the first official Poet Laureate of England in 1668 and was also appointed Historiographer Royal. Dryden is often called the “Father of English Criticism” because of his important contributions to literary theory and criticism. Dryden wrote in various genres, including poetry, drama, satire, and literary criticism. His early poem Astrea Redux (1660) welcomed the return of Charles II. His famous political satire Absalom and Achitophel (1681) uses biblical allegory to comment on contemporary political issues. Another important satirical work is Mac Flecknoe, which mocks the poet Thomas Shadwell. In religious poetry, The Hind and the Panther (1687) reflects his conversion to Roman Catholicism and discusses religious controversy. Dryden also wrote heroic dramas such as All for Love (a reworking of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra) and The Conquest of Granada. As a critic, his essay An Essay of Dramatic Poesy (1668) is a landmark work in English literary criticism, where he discusses classical and modern drama. In his later years, he translated classical works, including Virgil’s Aeneid. Dryden’s writing is marked by clarity, balance, wit, and mastery of the heroic couplet. He played a key role in shaping Restoration literature and laid the foundation for the Augustan age of Pope and Swift. His influence on English poetry, drama, and criticism makes him one of the most important literary figures of the seventeenth century.
