Crystal Lee Jones was a 21-year-old fashion and art student when, on October 12, 2015, she woke up from a nap with pins and needles in her legs and collapsed when she tried to stand. Within months, a sudden illness had left her paralyzed, having up to 20 seizures a day, completely blind, and unable to speak, while doctors kept telling her, “We don’t know.”
In this NancyTalk, Crystal—an adaptive athlete, sports broadcaster, speaker, entrepreneur, and content creator—takes us through the day everything changed: crawling across her room to call her mother, pushing herself to the bus stop on a skateboard, and a bus driver who took his bus out of service to bring her straight to her family. She speaks honestly about the holidays she spent in the hospital, hearing others debate whether she would ever live independently, and the moment in rehab when folding a pile of laundry brought her to tears.
Crystal also shares what moved her forward: borrowing hope from her family, friends, and care team; celebrating small victories; refusing to let her diagnosis become her identity; and saying yes to opportunities before she felt ready. Those choices led her back to sports, to a courtside microphone telling adaptive athletes’ stories, to speaking on stages like this one, and full circle to supporting patients at the very beginning of their own journeys.
Her central message is that your story has power—not because it is perfect, but because it is real. Leadership does not require a title or a big stage. It begins when you decide your life can make someone else’s better, and healing, hope, and leadership all grow in community.
CONTENT NOTE
This talk includes discussion of sudden paralysis, frequent seizures, loss of vision and speech, extended hospitalization, conversations about long-term care, and grief over a changed life.
