Kodak built the first self-contained digital still camera in 1975. In 2006, it led U.S. digital-camera sales by units. Six years later, Kodak and its U.S. subsidiaries filed for Chapter 11. So what actually went wrong? This is not the familiar story of a company that simply ignored digital. Kodak developed digital products, acquired an online photo service, and successfully sold digital cameras. The deeper problem was economic. Kodak's old advantage was not just the camera. It was a system in which every new roll of film created demand for processing, paper, chemicals, and prints. Digital photography did more than introduce a new product: it removed the recurring purchases that had made the old business so powerful. From Steven Sasson's 23-second prototype and the Advantix Preview to Ofoto, digital-camera leadership, and the widening gap between sales and earnings, the evidence points to a more complicated conclusion. Kodak saw digital. But digital eroded the economics behind its former advantage faster than the company could build a comparably profitable replacement. This documentary does not argue that Advantix—or any single decision—caused Kodak's restructuring. Falling film demand, restructuring costs, new investment needs, and other financial pressures converged during a difficult transition.
