Four days on the Abel Tasman Great Walk with children, planned day by day from Mārahau to Tōtaranui. Where to start, which legs suit which ages, how to time the Awaroa Inlet tide crossing, and whether to book huts or campsites.
This is an excellent walk for families. The environment is spectacular and there are a range of options for completing the walk. You can combine sections of walking with boat transfers. It is also possible to have your packs and tent transferred from one stop to another. This enables families to walk in comfort with day packs only. Our kids loved this walk.

Cross the Awaroa Inlet only in daylight and within the window DOC publishes, roughly 1.5 hours before to 2 hours after low tide. Water taxis generally do not run north of Tōtaranui, so if you are walking on to Wainui, arrange road transport before you start. When you book a bag transfer, ask for a luggage movement between your overnight stops, not just a passenger ticket, and confirm the weight limit, drop-off point and morning cut-off. Prices, sailing times and pick-up points change, so confirm them directly with the operator.

Conditions on the day override anything in this video. Check the Department of Conservation track alerts, tide tables and weather before you go.
