Its medieval Stari Grad fortress is believed to date from the late 14th or early 15th century and is considered one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Travnik later became an important administrative center of Ottoman Bosnia, with Ottoman governors ruling from the town for roughly a century and a half. Another unusual feature is that Travnik has two historic clock towers, something Visit Bosnia and Herzegovina describes as unique within the country. The town is also the birthplace of Ivo Andrić, winner of the 1961 Nobel Prize in Literature, whose reconstructed birth house now serves as a memorial museum. At the foot of the old fortress, the cold spring of Plava Voda flows directly through one of Travnik’s most atmospheric areas, surrounded by bridges, greenery, cafés, and rushing water.
