We drove across Florida to the outskirts of Tampa with no plan and no guest, because every time we go to a public course near home, people already know us and ask if I’m about to challenge them. Our first stop was a course with no driving range and nobody on the putting green, so we headed to the North Course at Lake Jovita, where a college team practices. I spent the afternoon walking the range asking for a scratch golfer to play me one v one, straight up, for $100 a hole. A teaching pro turned me down to play with his family, and then I spotted a kid in college gear with a massive bucket and the best swing on the range. I walked up and told him “you look good,” and he thought I meant his looks (I meant his swing, I promise). His name is Paul, he plays for Saint Leo, and he’s a +3 handicap, so better than me on paper. He said no. He was practicing for two hours and didn’t have time, even for money. Ten minutes later, he walked over and changed his mind. Paul is a 19-year-old freshman from Cologne, Germany. His parents are from China, and his dad moved to Germany to study physics. Before college he had never been to the US, and he committed to Saint Leo without ever touring it, because in Europe you can’t play college sports and get an education at the same time. His favorite thing about America so far is Chipotle, and he’s been with his girlfriend back in Germany for a year and a half, talking every day across the time change. It was the craziest wind I’ve ever seen in Florida. I hit my shot of the day on 2 and still lost the hole, and I went 2 down after three. I offered him a $200 mulligan after a bad shot on 4. He turned it down, and I took that hole back. Then I missed a 3-footer for par on 7 with $300 on the line, and Paul went 2 up with $500 in his pocket. I won 8 to stay alive at 1 down with one to play. On 9, the three handicap hole, I needed to win to force extra holes. My wedge came up short of the green, and Paul two-putted to close out the match 1 up and walk away with $400. It was a tough one, but Paul was the perfect random golfer, and he saved us an overnight stay in Tampa by changing his mind.
