In this new episode of Flo’s Explorations, we’re heading to the world’s smallest country: Sealand. Located about 6 miles off the English coast, Sealand can only be reached by boat or helicopter. It was created in the late 1960s on an abandoned military platform by a former British Army major who wanted to broadcast pirate radio — rock and pop music that was banned in the U.K. at the time. Today, the tiny sea fortress has become a symbol of the libertarian movement. From a coup d’état and shootouts with the British navy to hosting illegal websites, this is the wild story of Sealand, a self-declared micronation in the middle of the North Sea. Our journalist Florian visited the site with Prince Liam Bates, the founder’s grandson, and Mike Barrington, Sealand’s customs officer and caretaker.
