What causes an event to happen? Is everything determined by Karma, Fate, Nature or Time, or does human effort also have a role? In this lecture, we discuss the Panch Samavaya (पंच समवाय) theory in Jain philosophy and understand how Jainism explains causation through the interaction of five factors: Kāla (काल) – Time Svabhāva (स्वभाव) – Nature Niyati (नियति) – Determinism/Fate Pūrva-kṛta Karma / Nimitta (पूर्वकृत कर्म / निमित्त) – Past Karma and external circumstances Puruṣārtha (पुरुषार्थ) – Self-effort or conscious effort Jain philosophy does not explain an event through a single cause. The doctrine of Pañca Samavāya presents a multiple-cause understanding that is closely connected with the Jain principle of Anekāntavāda. The absolutization of one cause is rejected, while the combined operation of the causes provides a more comprehensive explanation of events. The lecture also explores the important philosophical question of Free Will vs. Determinism: If Karma and Niyati influence our lives, what role does Puruṣārtha play? This lecture is useful for students of Jain Philosophy, Indian Philosophy, Jainology, Comparative Philosophy and Philosophy of Religion.
