The man from the Lavaux file took the night train south, and Vivian took the seat behind him. He gets off in Venice and goes straight to the Lido, where an old friend of Vivian's is lingering at the Excelsior past the end of the season with a new companion — a second face from the same file. There is a mahogany runabout, a chip on a gold chain, and the Contessa's evening ritual of a Bellini before the tables. Simone Vance has a suite to get into, a case to open, and a pair of sables to borrow. What she finds in the case changes whose night this is. 🍸 TONIGHT'S NIGHTCAP: the Rossini The Contessa drinks Bellinis in the episode; tonight we pour its sister. Harry's Bar, Venice, made the Bellini with white peaches and then, for the strawberry months, the Rossini — named for Gioachino Rossini, whose very first opera opened in Venice in 1810, six years before The Barber of Seville. The pair started a Venetian habit of naming every fruit-and-prosecco pour after an Italian great: mandarin makes a Puccini, pomegranate a Tintoretto. In the Barber a count gets into the house under a borrowed name and walks out with what he came for.
