Shizuka Anderson explores the back alleys of Sendai City’s Iroha Yokocho, joined once again by tour guide and rakugo performer, Chie Tamada.
In 1945, central Sendai was burned down in the air raids, and the following year Iroha Yokocho rose from its ashes. With a history spanning over 70 years, the yokocho (“alleyway”) epitomized Sendai’s quick recovery, the market bustling and shopkeepers hard at work all day. Today, Iroha Yokocho has over 100 bars and restaurants, the perfect place to get a bite to eat or unwind after a long day.
