A pub on a roundabout in Birkenhead.
it was originally built as a private residence, said to have been occupied in 1795 by Benedictine monks expelled from France.the building has had various names,
the last three being The Royal Castle, Hotel California and Revolver. It used to be a popular music venue before shutting in June last year.
Originally built as a private residence, said to have been occupied in 1795 by Benedictine monks expelled from France.
it has been known by various names over its life Tranmere Inn & Ferry House, Castle Hotel and became the Royal Castle by 1870.
Acquired by Threlfalls in mid 1890s and selling Whitbread beers into the 1980s. Later known as Hotel California, Mr Davidson's Bar then Revolver before closure in 2018.
after it closed in 2018 when operators moved to new premises leaving the building abandoned and became a target for vandalism, metal thiefs and then fire bombed on two successive
nights in 2019.
the building is now exremely unsafe with substantial damage. Planning permission to build a hotel on the site was put to the council but was refused in 2021.
Future of this once grand building looks uncertain and very bleak.
