The Roman Shadow
Some men don't run. They just make you wait.
Rome, late September, 1964. The kind of heat that makes weaker men sweat through their shirts by noon. Marco Serrano isn't one of them. His name isn't really Marco — it's the third alias he's burned through this month — but the calm is real. It's the only thing about him that is.
He stands on Via del Corso beside a car that most men on this street have only seen in magazines — custom-built, quietly modified, fitted with details no factory ever offered and no ordinary buyer ever requested. It's the kind of machine that could win the most famous race in Europe without breaking a sweat. Tonight, it has a different job, and Marco doesn't feel the need to prove what it — or he — is capable of. That's the whole point. Real power doesn't announce itself. It waits, parked at the curb, perfectly content to be underestimated.
Six blocks back, a man in a grey overcoat has been trailing him this whole time. Marco hasn't turned around once. Doesn't need to. He's already clocked the coat, the gait, the way this particular ghost breathes through his mouth when he thinks no one's counting. There's a certain kind of man who commands a room without raising his voice, who makes other men check their posture without knowing why. Marco has always been that kind of man. It's never been a choice — it's just what's left once you stop needing to react to anything.
He doesn't know who sent the shadow behind him. Rome station. Someone higher. Someone with a personal reason to see today go wrong. He doesn't much care, either. In this business, you don't survive by wondering who's coming for you — you survive by deciding, long before they arrive, that you're already in control.
The package in his coat is small. What it's worth isn't. And somewhere between the car at the curb and the dome rising pale over the rooftops, Marco is about to find out whether the man behind him is an enemy, a colleague, or something colder than both. It hardly matters which. He made his decision about who runs this encounter before the shadow ever left the corner.
He lights another cigarette. Lets the shadow close the distance.
He's not the one who should be nervous.
