Rare footage of Katkout al-Amir (1945-2012) singing Hala bil-Zein Hala Yama on TV in the late 1970's accompanied by the dancer Shadia. He never released this song on an album and only performed it for this special occasion. Katkout was an early Egyptian shaabi singer, Ahmed Adawiya's main rival. He began as a tabla player with the Diamond Orchestra where he became the youngest percussionist to perform with Umm Kulthum, notably on "Fakarouni." He then switched to singing in hotels and nightclubs and shot to stardom after his first cassette came out in 1976. He appeared in over 14 films and was married to dancer Aiza Sherif at one point. His most celebrated tracks include "Ghazal El Darb El Ahmar," "Alo Ya Manya," "Harat El Helween," and "Merci". Check out my other clip of him singing Ghazel el Darb al-Ahmar with Hayatim in the 1980's. LYRICS: Welcome, beauty, mother, welcome. Welcome to the one I love so deeply, The one who came with longing and desire for me Who spoke so many words of love. My love, you are my most precious gift I love you as my heart, the light of my eyes I love you more every day It increases day by day.
