If you're trying to do a sweep and pick up every soul in a particular area, the guide is designed to keep backtracking to a minimum. It's recommended you go for these during the "Jet Technique" missions. You'll have access to every area, a decent time limit, and you'll automatically "pass" the level when the timer runs out. Collecting tags and then failing a mission will cause you to lose those tags.
