🚴 Cycling to Wakefield's Iconic Covered Bridge
Join me on another cycling adventure as I ride to Wakefield, Quebec, a picturesque village in the Gatineau Hills known for its beautiful scenery, historic railway heritage, and one of the region’s most recognizable landmarks—the Wakefield Covered Bridge.
In this video, I explore the village, visit the iconic red covered bridge spanning the Gatineau River, and take a look at Wakefield's fascinating railway history, including its historic railway turntable.
Whether you're interested in cycling, Canadian history, covered bridges, railway heritage, or exploring the beautiful Outaouais region, I hope you'll enjoy the ride!
📍 Wakefield, Quebec
Located in the municipality of La Pêche, Wakefield is a historic village in Quebec's Gatineau Hills, roughly north of Ottawa. The village sits along the Gatineau River and has long been associated with forestry, mills, tourism, and transportation.
Today, Wakefield is a popular destination for visitors looking to enjoy the river, surrounding forests, historic buildings, cycling, hiking, and the many attractions found throughout the Gatineau Valley.
The village has retained much of its historic character, making it a fascinating place to explore by bicycle.
🌉 The Iconic Wakefield Covered Bridge
The highlight of today's ride is the famous Wakefield Covered Bridge, also known as the Gendron Covered Bridge.
The original bridge was constructed in 1915 and became an important connection between the two sides of the Gatineau River. Sadly, the historic bridge was destroyed by fire in 1984.
Rather than allowing the landmark to disappear, local residents organized a major community effort to rebuild it. The replacement bridge was constructed using the original foundations and was completed in the late 1990s. It was officially inaugurated in 1998.
Today, the striking red wooden bridge is reserved for pedestrians and cyclists, making it a particularly enjoyable destination for a cycling trip. The bridge measures approximately 87.8 metres (288 feet) long and offers a beautiful view of the Gatineau River.
🚂 Wakefield's Railway History
Wakefield's history is closely connected to the railway.
Rail service reached Wakefield in 1892, connecting the village with the growing communities along the Gatineau Valley and providing an important transportation link to Ottawa. The railway helped local businesses and also made it possible for residents to travel to Ottawa for work, school, and shopping.
The original railway station stood near the location of today's turntable. A larger replacement station was built in 1929 and later became the building that is now associated with the village's historic restaurant scene.
Although the railway's original commercial role eventually declined, its legacy remains an important part of Wakefield's history.
🔄 Wakefield's Historic Railway Turntable
One of the most interesting pieces of Wakefield's railway heritage is the railway turntable.
The turntable was brought to Wakefield from Kingston, Ontario, and installed in 1974. Its purpose was simple but ingenious: it allowed a steam locomotive to be physically rotated so it could head back in the opposite direction.
During the era of the Hull–Chelsea–Wakefield tourist steam train, the locomotive would arrive in Wakefield, be uncoupled from the train, and then be turned around on the hand-operated turntable before being connected to the opposite end of the coaches for the return journey.
Today, the turntable remains an intriguing reminder of Wakefield's railway past and the era when steam trains brought visitors into the village.
