A Quiet Ride Through Maryland's Forgotten Trails Come along for another relaxing ride through Maryland neighborhoods, peaceful bike paths, wooded trails, quiet backroads, and, of course, another visit to the ever-unpredictable haunted golf course. No racing, no training plans, and no pressure to chase personal records. Just a bicycle, cool Sunday air, changing fall colors, some relaxing nature sounds, and a sunset that suddenly decided to show up an hour earlier. One of my favorite parts of documenting the same roads and trails throughout the year is seeing just how dramatically they can change depending on the weather, season, and even the time of day. Today gave us one of the clearest seasonal shifts yet, with Daylight Saving Time ending this morning and the evening light moving noticeably earlier. That meant heading out about an hour earlier than I normally would, but somehow I still managed to catch the route right as the daylight began fading into dusk. The weather was cool and comfortable, exactly what I want from a late-fall ride. The Sunday roads were quiet, there wasn’t much activity along the trails, and the combination of crisp air and changing leaves made the whole ride feel especially calm. The fall colors are getting deeper now too. Trees that were almost completely green only a few weeks ago are filled with yellows, oranges, reds, and browns, while more leaves cover the ground with every ride. Some of the wooded trails are beginning to feel almost forgotten as the canopy thins and the paths disappear beneath layers of fallen leaves. It’s a completely different landscape from the Summer Cycle. The earlier sunset might be the biggest adjustment, though. We’ve spent months slowly watching the available evening light disappear, but changing the clocks makes that transition feel immediate. Suddenly dusk arrives incredibly early, and the familiar late-afternoon ride can turn into an evening ride before you know it. There was something beautiful about catching that fading light today. The sky softened as the ride continued, the wooded sections became darker, and the last remaining sunlight filtered through the autumn trees before disappearing for the evening. And yes, before the gear experts arrive in the comments, I am fully aware that I don’t shift nearly as often as I probably should. My strategy remains simple: put the bike in a difficult gear and see who gives up first, me or the drivetrain.
