On January 10, 1864, the people of Bannack, Montana hanged their own sheriff — Henry Plummer, the man they had elected to keep the peace. They were certain he was secretly leading a gang of road agents responsible for up to a hundred murders along the gold trails. But to this day, nobody can prove they were right.
Bannack is one of America's best-preserved forgotten towns — and unlike most ghost towns, it was never erased. Sixty-plus original buildings still stand along its deserted main street in southwestern Montana, frozen in time as Bannack State Park. This is the story of the gold strike that started Montana, the boomtown that became the territory's first capital, and the sheriff whose guilt Montana has debated for 160 years.
