Dinner? Yes. Saturday? Yes. Could you help? Of course. Could you stay? Certainly. Could you become slightly less yourself so everyone else feels comfortable? Apparently... yes. I attended parties I spent three hours trying to leave. I bought shoes that hurt my feet because someone said they suited me. I listened politely to men explaining things I already knew. Sometimes twice. I was very agreeable. It was exhausting. Then somewhere between fifty and knowing better, I discovered a beautiful little word. No. No, I don't think so. No, not today. No explanation. No apology. Nothing more I need to say. Every no returns a minute. Every no returns a choice. Funny how it took me half a lifetime to recognize my own voice. Would I like another committee? No. A weekend with people I barely know? No. An extended warranty? Absolutely not. Would I like to hear why I am making a terrible mistake? Especially no. But yes... to coffee with an old friend. Yes to walking home. Yes to an afternoon with absolutely nothing written in the little squares. Yes to music. Yes to bread. Yes to sitting by the window when the evening turns the rooftops red. No. No, I don't think so. No, not today. No explanation. No apology. Nothing more I need to say. Every no returns a minute. Every no returns a choice. Funny how it took me half a lifetime to recognize my own voice. They told us time is money. That was wrong. Money comes back. Sometimes. Time doesn't. So when you ask me for an hour, you are asking for the only currency I cannot earn again. Don't be offended if I spend it carefully. No. Such a small word. One syllable. Almost nothing. Yet somehow the first time you say it calmly and don't explain... the room changes shape. Yesterday someone asked: “Are you becoming selfish?” I thought about it. Slowly. Carefully. Then said: “No.” See? I'm getting good at this. No. Not out of anger. No. Not out of fear. No, because the days ahead have suddenly become very dear. And every no to what I don't need leaves a little room to say: Yes, come sit beside me. Yes, let's take the long way. Yes, play that song again. Yes, pour the coffee. Yes, stay. I spent years trying not to disappoint everyone. That included me. So... not anymore. No. Beautiful word.
