For 0.9% w/v sodium chloride Normal Saline injection I.P.:
1. Exposure to greater than 40°C for 5 hours:
Sodium chloride itself is chemically quite stable, so a brief heat exposure does not usually cause NaCl to decompose or suddenly become toxic.
However, temperatures above the labeled storage range can potentially affect the container/closure system and product sterility or physical integrity.
The exact acceptability depends on the manufacturer’s temperature-excursion data.
2. After cooling to 10°C:
Cooling it back to 10°C does not reverse any damage caused by the heat excursion.
It should not automatically be considered safe for injection simply because it has cooled down.
If this is an actual IV bag/ampoule that was exposed to greater than 40°C for 5 hours, don’t administer it unless the manufacturer/pharmacist confirms that the temperature excursion is acceptable.
Important: If the container is swollen, leaking, damaged, cloudy, has particles, or has any abnormal appearance → discard it.
So, in short: NaCl concentration is unlikely to change significantly, but cooling does not guarantee sterility or product integrity.
