After my original tour was cancelled, I ended up finding a few people who wanted to explore the Atacama Desert on their own. So we rented a car, made a rough plan, and spent the next days driving through some of the strangest landscapes in northern Chile.
We started with the ancient petroglyphs of Yerbas Buenas before continuing into Valle del Arcoíris, where the mountains suddenly changed into layers of red, green and white.
From there we crossed the desert to the Lagunas Escondidas de Baltinache — a surreal series of salt lagoons surrounded by one of the driest landscapes on Earth.
With daylight disappearing, we tried to reach Valle de la Luna before sunset and eventually ended up at the abandoned Magic Bus surrounded by gypsum-covered desert hills.
The next morning we drove north toward El Tatio. Instead of repeating the normal tourist route, we followed rough desert roads through the geothermal landscape before heading back south through Machuca, flamingo-filled wetlands, Mirador Putana and finally the Puritama canyon.
Filmed in the Atacama Desert, Chile — 18–20 June 2026.
