Close To Home

“Close To Home” is a song about something I believe many of us have found ourselves wondering lately: When did we lose our way? It isn't a song about politics, race, gun control, or pointing a finger at one particular group. It's about something deeper — the gradual loss of the values, faith, personal responsibility, family structure, and concern for one another that once helped hold communities together. There was a time when dinner was on the table, a father sat at the head, heads bowed for the evening blessing, a hand went over the heart for the pledge, and ten rules of life carved in stone helped guide us from the start. Somewhere along the way, we quit looking out and started looking in. We drew lines between ourselves. Common ground became harder to find. Responsibility became somebody else's problem. And human life somehow became cheaper. I didn't write “Close To Home” to tell anyone what they should think. I wrote it because something happened close enough to home that it made me stop and think. Maybe that's all this song is supposed to do. Make us wonder. The rules in stone are still there.
