This real-time drive begins in Papanui, a bustling commercial and residential hub, and takes you south through Fendalton’s tree-lined streets and historic homes, into the retail energy of Riccarton, the cultural charm of Addington, and the leafy serenity of Somerfield. We continue through Cashmere, a hillside suburb full of charm, and ascend into the Port Hills, where we end at the iconic Sign of the Kiwi Café—a treasured historic stop with sweeping views of the Southern Alps and Lyttelton Harbour.

Route Highlights:
Papanui: A northern suburb known for Northlands Mall, convenient access to the airport, and a mix of schools, shops, and family homes. It's a vital part of Christchurch's commercial and residential network.
Fendalton: One of the city’s oldest and most prestigious suburbs. Expect leafy streets, heritage architecture, and proximity to the University of Canterbury and Mona Vale Gardens.
Riccarton: A lively hub for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Home to Westfield Mall and Riccarton Bush—Christchurch’s last remaining pocket of native lowland forest.
Addington: A vibrant area with deep roots in industry and horse racing, now transformed into a cultural zone with live music venues, cafes, and event spaces like Wolfbrook Arena.
Somerfield: A quiet, family-friendly suburb flanking the Heathcote River. Known for its gardens, parks, and relaxed pace of life.
Cashmere: Nestled at the base of the Port Hills, Cashmere offers elevated homes, winding roads, and stunning views. A favourite for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility close to the city.
Port Hills & Sign of the Kiwi Café: The drive ends at this historic rest stop, originally built in 1917 as one of several “Signs of the Hill” rest houses designed by conservationist Harry Ell. The Sign of the Kiwi is now a charming café perched on the Summit Road, with views across the Canterbury Plains to the Southern Alps, and down into Lyttelton Harbour. It’s a popular starting point for hikes and a beloved place to relax with a coffee, surrounded by natural beauty and rich history.
