How One Christianity Erased the Rest: What the Floor Showed Me (S1E1)

It began with a crack in the floor. Beneath the ancient Basilica of Aquileia in northern Italy lies a mosaic older than the church above it, and it tells a story the church never did. Fishermen with wings, a man swallowed by a sea dragon, ordinary people caught in a ritual that carries no cross, no bishop, and no altar. Christianity did not begin unified. It began as a forest of competing communities, and what we now call orthodoxy was simply one tree among many. Three discoveries make the case: • the library found near Nag Hammadi in Egypt in 1945, which preserved gospels and revelations no canon contains • the open conflict between the letters of the apostle Paul and the Book of Acts, where one exposes division and the other smooths it away • the shattered, plural Judaism of the first century, broken further when Rome destroyed the Temple in 70 CE Then the empire arrived. Through the Edict of Milan in 313, the Council of Nicaea in 325, and the Edict of Thessalonica in 380, one version of Christianity passed through a narrow bottleneck and emerged as the only legal religion. The rest did not die natural deaths. This is not an attack on faith, nor a defence of it. The task is historical. The winners did not inherit a consensus, they imposed one.
