Gandalf, a wizard of great renown, is looking for someone to join him on an adventurous quest. Bilbo, however, has no interest in adventures, which he deems "nasty, disturbing, and uncomfortable things." Gandalf introduces himself, but Bilbo, trying to politely brush him off, fails to grasp the wizard's intent. Gandalf, undeterred by Bilbo's reluctance, leaves a secret mark on the hobbit's door, signaling to the dwarves of Thorin Oakenshield's company that this is the home of their "burglar."
