Two female journalists from the Midwest just talking about the news, trends and weird cultural things happening in the world.
National news:
• Trump is an ass man: President Donald Trump went on a bizarre rant about Sen. Jon Husted’s (R-Ohio) physique during a midterm rally in North Carolina on Tuesday. “His ass, shit, it’s like, it’s like a pile of muscle,” Trump said. “Then I looked at his legs, and I said, ‘Man, his feet are big.’ Then I looked at his shoulders, and I tapped him on the shoulder, and it actually hurt my hand. He’s like a piece of steel. I said, ‘This guy’s a monster.’”
• Report: U.S. preparing to order some departures from embassies in Gulf Region: The U.S. State Department is reportedly preparing to issue departure orders for some personnel at U.S. embassies in the Gulf region. Two officials said the decision is being made due to hostilities possibly resuming with the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. A security alert was issued Wednesday by the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh warning about possible attacks on Saudi Arabia by the Houthis. The departure orders could involve the evacuation of all personnel and their families in Saudi Arabia.
Statewide:
• Republican consultant Yob: Democrats will win governor, U.S. Senate: Republican consultant John Yob is predicting Democrats will win the governor’s office, U.S. Senate and all three competitive races for the U.S. House in November. However, he also believes the Republican Party will retain control of the Michigan House of Representatives. Yob says he believes Jocelyn Benson will be the next governor, Abdul El-Sayed the next U.S. senator and Republican incumbent Congressmen Bill Huizenga and Tom Barrett will both lose. Huizenga is facing state Sen. Sean McCann of Kalamazoo, and Barrett is challenged by Democratic candidate William Lawrence, who has a lot of support from Michigan State University voters.
• Second polling firm busted for fake numbers: It appears another polling firm has been busted for using fake numbers with midterms fast approaching. Wedgewood Polling was questioned by a polling aggregator about their methodology after giving sizable leads to Democrats in Texas, Michigan, Georgia, Maine, Ohio and Kansas and elsewhere. Wedgewood has now admitted to the made-up numbers, and is calling it a social experiment to see how many news outlets would use it. Wedgewood polls were cited by The New York Times and other outlets. This comes after polling firm Media Strategies pulled a similar stunt in August. FCC chair Brendan Carr warned that broadcasters who air the fake data risk losing their licenses.
Local news:
• County commissioners poised to intervene in $330M solar dispute: Caught between the shift toward clean energy and the defense of local agricultural land, the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners met during an Oct. 16 work session to grapple with a high-stakes decision: whether to formally intervene in state-level regulatory proceedings over the controversial $330 million Silver Maple Solar Project. An Ottawa County judge has granted a clean energy developer legal control of 562 acres of farmland, barring a local family from working the soil to remove one hurdle for a 1,900-acre solar project spanning Zeeland and Jamestown townships.
