Plant City Bonsai - Summer 2016 - Whats looking good right now! The lack of rain has made for a fantastic growing season due to conifers, pines and junipers. No issues to deal with as we can water any time we need to. Steve Discusses - Tropicals and subtropicals are coming back in stock. A beautiful Golden Gate Ficus will grow in lower ligth but thrives in higher light. A dramatic Arboricola with the banyon style root display and will accept lower light so it works with everyones home environment. A variety of sizes that work even in space limited homes. Jabotacaba subtropical accepts a wide variety of acceptible conditions but loves water and good light. The bark of this tree is an exfoliating bark and looks fantastic. Steve talks about a forest of Trident Maples that he grew at his fathers home in Tennessee years ago. The pot itself is quite a find and adds such a sense of elegance to the entire planting. Nonblooming azaleas represent rhodedentron in the scene. All of it comes together for fantastic miniature forest. Rose of Sharon is an unusual candidate for bonsai but looks beautiful in a three tree planting. Its been around for over 20 years and has made several trips back to Steve. An often featureed Itogawa grafted onto what is probably Camasipirus. Its fascinating to watch these trees over the years and see their transformations. Subtle in this case but dramatic in other cases. A new aquisition for this season is a rare three grouping of Trident Maples. Lacerock is a big product as we have had a great supply of. We have a small Trident already placed in lacerock and it has a great presence. One of my favorite is the Satske Azalea in the exposed root style. Another Trident Maple with a root over rock style offers a different approach to the planting of Tridents. Steve talks Big Sur and Coastal Redwoods and offers up an example that he's worked on for over 4 years. A stunning planting with large scale lacerock containing a variety of complimentary species. The classes have been a hit and we plan on doing more. The last tree featured is a recent aquisition to the nursery and provides an interesting feature in that looks like black pine stock with white pine grafted on. But for such a feat there are no grafting scars at all. Definitely an interesting aquistion. Christmas at Plant City Bonsai is always a delight. Every year the main attraction here at the nursery is the glass house. It takes a huge amount of work to get everything organized and ready for the season but it is worth it! The lights are up and there are hundreds of bonsai to choose from. For the budget minded all the way up to finished specimen to put under your Christmas tree for a loved one (or yourself ;-) Please stop by and tour the nursery. It's a fantastic place to visit. There is something beautiful around every corner and it changes from season to season so there is always something new to see. Steve talks about his signature "flat of 9", a great way to get into the hobby on a budget and you get 9 trees, each one is unique and ready for your imagination to turn them into living art. A lot more of the trees from the latest collection are featured and keep an eye out for the gorgeous Kingsville Boxwood that is one of the best looking specimens that I've seen in a long time.
