The Mortgage Business Is Changing. What Actually Wins Now? | NEMBC Executive Panel

The mortgage business is changing, but what actually creates a durable advantage now? At the New England Mortgage Bankers Conference (NEMBC) in Rhode Island, I joined a group of mortgage executives for a candid conversation about the decisions shaping the next era of our industry. We intentionally went beyond the usual conversation about AI and technology. Technology can enable a business, but it can't decide what that business should become. I was excited to talk about some of the bigger questions mortgage leaders and Mortgage Advisors are facing right now... which are: Who really owns the customer relationship? What does “customer for life” actually require? How should companies think about growth, talent and economics? Where does technology create real value? And what happens when the traditional mortgage business model no longer works the way it used to? One of the areas I'm super passionate about is the future of this industry and how to help bridge the gap of where advisors are today to the role they will need to become for the future. I personally don't believe our future is simply getting better at originating loans or trying to win on rates and terms. If that's all the consumer sees us as, eventually we're competing on price. I believe there's a much bigger role available to us. We can become proactive advisors in the financial lives of the families we serve, helping them think through real estate and financial decisions before a transaction ever exists and continuing that stewardship long after one closes. This panel gets into that idea, but also the larger structural questions facing mortgage companies today, including customer ownership, retention, partnerships, advisor productivity, company economics, growth and consolidation.
