Kill or Be Killed - MAPHRA | Vocalists' Reaction & Vocal Analysis

MAPHRA is officially a vocal unicorn! I genuinely don't know how she manages to pack this much vocal versatility, control and sheer aggression into just 3 minutes and 21 seconds. In this reaction and vocal analysis, I take a deep dive into MAPHRA’s incredible cover of “Kill or Be Killed”, originally performed by Jutes, examining exactly what makes this performance so extraordinary. We’re talking clean vocals, mixed belting, head voice, pitch screams, false-cord distortion, laryngeal vibrato, resonance manipulation and those absolutely ridiculous transitions between clean singing and distortion. And the thing that genuinely floored me? MAPHRA doesn't simply produce distortion. She appears to have an extraordinary degree of control over its intensity, placement, tonal colour and relationship to pitch. At one moment we're hearing a dark, resonant clean voice with an almost sob-like laryngeal vibrato. Then she unleashes a full mixed belt before seamlessly transforming it into distortion. Then she moves into head voice… and somehow finds her way back into distortion again. As a vocalist and vocal coach, I can explain many of the mechanisms involved. But here's the problem: I don't understand how she's doing ALL OF THIS in three minutes and twenty-one seconds. Bloody phenomenal.
