Learn Dutch numbers from 20 to 9,999,999 — the complete guide to counting in Dutch. In this lesson you’ll learn how Dutch numbers are built, why they run backwards compared to English, and how to say every number up to seven digits with confidence. Dutch numbers trip up almost every learner, and it’s not the vocabulary — it’s the order. In Dutch you say één-en-twintig (literally “one-and-twenty” same order as "nine-teen"), not “twenty-one”. Once that clicks, the whole system opens up, because the same pattern repeats all the way to the millions. So why is it backwards? It isn’t — English is the odd one out. Old English said “one and twenty” too, and you can still hear it in four and twenty blackbirds. German, Danish and Dutch kept the original Germanic order; English switched around the 17th century. The Dutch words were also fixed centuries before the digits 0–9 reached Europe, so eenentwintig isn’t reversed against 21 — 21 simply came later.
