In 1961, the FBI put a small-town NAACP leader from Monroe, North Carolina, on a wanted poster and called him "armed and extremely dangerous." Robert F. Williams had organised his neighbours to defend their homes from the Ku Klux Klan, and that decision sent him into eight years of exile in Cuba and China. This is his story: the Klan raids, the Kissing Case, the break with the NAACP, the debate with Martin Luther King Jr., Radio Free Dixie, and the long road home.
